April 2008

The bestest (is so a word), richest, not too gooey but not too cakey recipe on the planet for brownies! I’m not kidding. These are the kind you better make for other people or with other people in attendance or you will eat the entire pan before it has a chance to cool!

6 squares unsweetened baking chocolate, melted or 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/3 cup plus 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 3/4 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour

A turkey and provolone cheese on whole wheat french bread with honey djionaise sauce

Mini toast with Laughing Cow spreadable swiss cheese

Apple (sliced) with Nutella (not pictured)

The apples are in one of the new Ichiban Kan bowls - I have discovered that one lid fits ok, the other not at all. Its the perfect size for an apple that’s been sliced but it is not air tight nor are you guaranteed that the lid will fit perfectly.

Bun Dinos - BBQ chicken and Ham and Cheese - freezer section. They were very good. I think I’m going to try the Pizza ones next as well as the dessert (fruit filled) ones.

Ben and Jerry’s Cookie Dough ice cream

Sliced strawberries

Frozen broccoli

I got my order of Ichiban Kan stuff today! And it was still a little strange buying dollar store type stuff and having to open it all up from a box.

First off, the box was huge (20 inches x 10 1/2 inches x 14 inches)! They did a FABULOUS job packing…brown paper to stabilize and packing peanuts to fill it all in. It was also only a week, exactly, from the time of purchase to receipt. I am very happy! Now on to the good stuff!!

So you think you know this recipe huh? Think again. I despise soggy, mushy french toast. The basic recipe that you think you know is anything but basic. It should almost be a crepe coated bread.

2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (or to taste)
3 tablespoons flour
pinch of salt
6 slices of bread, any kind you like

I apologize for the lack of recipes and other material the last week or so. I’ve been dealing with some issues, technical as well as personal. I have several things lined up for this next week including SEVERAL recipes! The first of which will appear on Saturday.

And I should get my first order of Ichiban Kan stuff on Monday so I will be showcasing all those as well! It was a weird experience buying dollar store type stuff online…and now having to wait for the UPS guy to deliever it!

Portabello Bites (found these premade in the produce section at my local grocery store - they are portabello mushrooms mixed with cheese with a crispy coating, just reheat and serve)

Lighthouse Ranch dressing in silicon cup (not a great idea, but its too thick and I needed more than my condiment cups would allow in order to dip the portabello bites and have some on my salad)

Leftover BBQ chicken

plain Romaine lettuce, forgot I had run out of tomatoes

A few chocolate coated peanuts for dessert

Italian wrap sandwich - salami, pepperoni, swiss cheese, romaine lettuce and a few other things…this was a bought “sandwich”

Mini toasted bread slices

Laughing Cow spreadable cheese

Strawberries

The last of the White Chocolate Marble Pocky

Rice with with Katsuo Fumi furikake (bonito & sesame seeds furikake)

Mandarin oranges

carrots

Mussels, removed from their shells

Rice cake to snack on

Sorry about the lack on an update the last couple of days. My card reader is not working for some reason and I haven’t been able to download pics. Should be up and running by tomorrow!!

Ichiban Kan finally opened today!! Now there is a place to get all your plastics and bentos!!

Happy Shopping and don’t do what I will be doing - spending LOTS and LOTS of dough!

If you look back at any of my previous postings you see hummus quite a lot. I adore making hummus. Its easy, everything is fairly shelf stable and definitely a staple in my kitchen (though I do run out of tahini a lot). All in all an easy, quick snack/side that is wonderful for you! Otherwise there would not be a whole blog dedicated to it!

1 (15 oz) can of chickpeas (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 garlic clove
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup lemon juice (about one lemon give or take)
1/4 tsp salt
olive oil to top, if desired
