So I needed a few things and decided I had to go to my local Japanese market (Aki Oriental), which near as I can tell is the only Japanese market in all of Omaha. Over the last few months they have gotten in “stranger and stranger” items…items more closely resembling the kinds of things I need to prepare authentic bento. They now have an entire shelf of plastic rice molds and boxes. Including these gems, which I did NOT expect to find. I was very pleasantly surprised!!

Leftover General Tso’s Chicken
Mandarin oranges
Laughing Cow spreadable swiss cheese (with a few crackers I already had stashed at work from earlier this week)
Leftover rice mixed with Katsuo Fumi furikake (bonito & sesame seeds furikake)
Del Valle Peach Nectar “juice”, rice cake, and Ego chocolate roll to snack on.
This was an incredibly filling dinner! I didn’t even finish it all!
Chicken salad made from smoked chicken, mayo, green onions, a little cumin, crushed red pepper and hot sauce.
Sliced red bell peppers to snack on
Mandarin oranges
An Ego chocolate Swiss roll
Crackers for the chicken salad
Rice cakes
New salt and pepper shaker and silverware
Since an e-book for this can be found here I’m not going to go seriously in depth in regards to recipes and the like.

So I’ve needed a salt and pepper shaker for my bento stuff for awhile now. I’ve been putting it off for the simple reason that I LOVE LOVE *LOVE*camping stores. I knew that my local Bass Pro Shop would have what I needed (its closer to my home than all the others including Cabela’s my other favorite) I just had to work up the nerve to go.

A total last minute meal. I had thought I was going out for dinner and had to cancel that idea for a number of reasons so this is what I managed to slap together…
Sandwich made from a small French bread loaf and Nutella
mandarin oranges
rice with with Katsuo Fumi furikake (bonito & sesame seeds furikake) - its my favorite!
Loacker (Italian) Quadratini wafer cookies - Tiramisu flavored
A few Hammond’s Candies- root beer barrels - mixed in with the cookies. Best candy on the planet and I grew up with it out in Denver. I can never get enough!
Eel and Crab rolled sushi; ginger and a soy sauce filled fish
Rice with Salmon furikake
Dessert Pocky and a rice cake to snack on
Seriously this cake is as easy as a boxed cake but completely from scratch. And its so rich you only need one piece. Really you do!!
This recipe comes to me via my paternal grandmother. She is not sure how long she has had it, 1950s at least. It resembles recipes available as early as the 20s so I’m honestly not sure about it. But it is a no fail cake and definitely the kind of thing where people ask for the recipe!

Published by R.C. Barnum Co. Original copyright date of publication is 1910. This was a subscription book and had to be purchased from a salesman (according to the inside cover page). Approximate size is 10 inches by 7 inches and its about 3 inches thick.
It includes 3 books in 1 - The People’s Home Medical Book by T.J. Ritter, MD, The People’s Home Recipe Book by Mrs. Alice Gitchell Kirk, and The People’s Home Stock Book by W.C. Fair, VS. At this current time it is my oldest authentic book. I have reproductions of earlier cookbooks but nothing else that is actually as old or older than this one.
